Narrow Beech Ferns
Sunday, July 28, 1:00 pm until 3:00 pm
Reservation Road, Sunderland MA
We have scheduled a pretty easy fern hike for the end of July, and it should be cool in the woods. Sunday July 28th from 1-3 PM, off Reservation Rd in Sunderland. We start on Tower Rd, continue down a trail to Cranberry Pond to pick up some wetland ferns, and back to Tower Rd to the parking. We should see about 22 ferns, most of them close along the road/trail. A good chance to remember the common ones and enjoy the less common, such as Broad and Narrow Beech ferns, Silvery Spleenwort or Glade fern, Walking fern, and Maidenhair.
We will meet at the parking lot on Reservation Rd in Sunderland, which is accessed off Rt 47. We recommend being ready for some mud, bugs, and some walking through ferns and other vegetation. You can turn back when we get to the end of the flat, open Tower Rd part if you are not comfortable with smaller trails with uneven ground and some bushwhacking in the second half of the route.
The photo is a recent one along Tower Rd of a nice patch of Narrow (or Long) Beech Ferns, Phegopteris connectilis.
