23 beautiful ferns
A lovely afternoon walking through the woods and wetlands of the 4H Forest in Leverett provided our group with the opportunity to see 23 beautiful ferns (although the fragile ferns were harder to appreciate in their brown shriveled state). The ferns here were a lot greener than many places we visit. We also saw a number of cardinal flowers.
The photo with this article is a fertile frond of the Royal Fern (Osmunda regalis), which is common on this site, especially along the edges of the beaver ponds.
A list of the 23 ferns identified on our walk is on our website under Downloads/Fern Lists for or from Walks.
