Pioneer Valley Fern Society

Reminder: MT Toby Fern Walk this Sunday 7/28

Tower Rd to Cranberry Pond & back

This Sunday July 28th from 1-3PM we will be holding our July public Fern Walk at Mt Toby Reservation. With about 22 different species of ferns, it is a great opportunity to enjoy a pleasant hike through the woods and review the ferns you know, and learn some new ones. The first part will be along Tower Rd, a flat and easy walk. The second half we loop through the woods on a smaller foot path to Cranberry Pond, to see additional species and enjoy the scenic view. We then continue along the trail and reconnect to Tower Rd.

Be prepared for the possibilities of ticks, poison ivy (not bad) and some muddy conditions. We will meet at the parking lot on Reservation Rd in Sunderland. For more information, see our Calendar listing.

The photo is of Sensitive Fern (Onoclea sensibilis), a common wetland fern. You have probably seen it along the roadsides, and maybe even in your yard! It is not usually colored like this, but its form is very recognizable.
