Maidenhair Spleenwort & Fragile Fern
There are several bits of Fern news I want to send, so am getting this second in the series out now. It is getting to be end of fern season and there is more to report!
These Wild Urban Ferns are a huge Maidenhair Spleenwort (Asplenium trichomanes) and a couple healthy Fragile Ferns (Cystopteris tenuis) growing right below it. Both species are usually found growing on rock faces in crevices and on ledges, usually somewhat shaded. They are growing in a corner where an old brick wall meets an old wall of stone blocks in downtown Turners Falls. There are several places in this area where they are growing on rock walls. I am glad no one has come along and weed-whacked them!
If you want to know where to find these, email me at pioneervalleyfernsociety@gmail.com.
A few more to come!
