Spring Ferning

More Moonworts!

There are a few different Moonworts most likely to be found in our area. The two most common are the Daisy-Leaf Moonwort (Botrychium matricarrifolium), which was highlighted in the last news article, and the Triangular Moonwort (Botrychium angustisegmentum), which is shown in this photo. This one is only about 2" tall, and is still growing. The blade will look the same as it grows, but the sporophore will grow taller and spread more openly. We found them growing in the same area as the Daisy-Leaf Moonworts, in moist rich woods. Some were actually growing in the bed of what had been a temporary spring flowing stream! There are a lot of Rattlesnake Ferns (Botrypus virginianus) around, and some Maidenhair Ferns (Adiantum pedatum). These small fleshy ferns seem to die off early summer, so they are a special treat when you can see them.

A reminder that we will be leading a Fern Walk for Beginners this Sunday June 8th from 1-3 PM at the Federated Women's Forest in Petersham MA. The east side of the Quabbin Reservoir watershed. We thought it was time to take you to some new places! I will add more information on directions to the site soon on the calendar listing.
