Walking Ferns
One of our favorite ferns is the Walking Fern (Asplenium rhizophyllum). It is not common, so it is a treat when we do see it. Most of the Walking Fern sites we have seen this year have looked poorly, with white or faded blades (leaves) and in some places, the ferns are almost gone. It seems the long drought last year really hit them hard, and we are hoping this wet Spring will help them to revive and return. One of the exceptions to the sad conditions is the population of Walking Ferns at a site we have been visiting in Gill. This is the largest and healthiest Walking Fern site we have seen, it is wonderful. The photo does not do it justice!
This is one of many wonderful ferns we will be seeing on our Fern Hike tomorrow (Sunday June 22nd). See calendar listing for details. We are meeting at the Barton Cove campground entrance parking area at 1 PM.
