Ghost Narrow Beech Fern
I usually post a photo of a "Ghost" Broad Beech Fern at Halloween because they are always the whitest and brightest, but wanted to do a different one this year. Randy & I have been photographing white ferns in September and October and I will post a separate page showing them this weekend. Today I am highlighting the related but smaller Narrow Beech Fern (Phegopteris connectilis). The "connectilis" part of the name refers to the top pinnae being connected. Phegopteris comes from the Greek "phegos", which means Beech. Apparently it was named because it was found growing under Beech trees. I don't think that is necessarily true around here.
Even though this is getting to be the end of the Fall season, we still have many ferns to enjoy outside. Happy Halloween!
