Fall Ferns 2026
Dissected Grape Ferns
Just a short reminder that the next Fern Walk is this Sunday September 13th starting at 1PM. We will meet at the parking lot at the corner of Amherst Rd and Rt 202 (Daniel Shays Highway) in Pelham. The old Pelham Hill Cemetery is behind the historic buildings at this site. We will have to walk carefully, as there are hundreds of Dissected Grape Ferns (Sceptridium dissectum) of various sizes, including beautiful big ones like in this photo. It is pretty much level ground. The Cemetery Commission has been kind enough to allow a delay in mowing until after this weekend so we can see and enjoy the wonderful wealth of Dissected Grape Ferns there. Thank you so much Cemetery Commissioners for doing this.
The exploration of this cemetery should take less than an hour, or as long as you want. For those who want to, we can take you to a second cemetery nearby in Pelham that also has a lot of Dissected Grape Ferns (Knights Corner Burial Ground). I love old cemeteries and the interesting gravestones, but the beautiful Dissected Grape Ferns are another great reason to visit them. These ferns are one of the special features to see in the Fall.
The weather forecast is mentioning the possibility of rain for Sunday. We plan to be there even if it is raining lightly. Just bring an umbrella!
